The Future of the Federal Workforce: Leveraging AI and Data for Policy Decisions and Hiring

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced a new workforce playbook for federal agencies, emphasizing the importance of leveraging artificial intelligence and data-driven decisions in shaping the federal workforce of the future. OPM Director Kiran Ahuja highlighted the need for a skilled, inclusive, and agile workforce to enable mission delivery.

The playbook outlines 12 priorities, including the integration of AI in the HR process, upskilling teams with the necessary competencies, and using data to inform policy decisions. The Government Accountability Office has identified over 1,200 existing and planned AI use cases that could help solve challenges and create opportunities for federal agencies.

The Biden administration is also encouraging agencies to explore the use of generative AI to improve efficiencies. Additionally, agencies are urged to implement data into decision-making processes, ensuring that employees have the necessary data skills. The Department of Defense is already using an advanced analytics platform to support decision-making.

OPM will provide training and technical assistance to agencies as they implement these strategies, with periodic updates on their Workforce of the Future webpage. This initiative aims to equip federal agencies with the tools and resources needed to hire the right talent and strategically plan for the future workforce.
