Consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton has taken a proactive approach to training its employees in the use of generative AI (GenAI) tools. The talent development group at the firm, which utilizes GenAI for tasks such as creating training videos and summarizing notes from staff meetings, first undergoes a comprehensive instruction program before being approved to use the technology on the job.

According to Jim Hemgen, director of talent development at Booz Allen Hamilton, the use of GenAI has significantly reduced content production time and costs. However, all employees must be approved and certified to use GenAI by completing internal training programs. The company’s AI Ready training initiative includes courses for all 33,000 employees to learn the basics of using GenAI, as well as more specialized content for specific roles such as engineers and consultants.

The focus of the training is on the responsible and ethical use of GenAI, covering topics such as preventing bias, ensuring accuracy, and safeguarding confidential data. Hemgen emphasizes the importance of AI readiness, ensuring that all employees are well-versed in GenAI capabilities and can use the technology ethically and safely.

The rapid rise of GenAI has created a need for reskilling across industries, challenging HR and learning leaders to develop agile training strategies to keep pace with the evolving technology. Many organizations are moving towards widespread adoption of GenAI tools, impacting roles in technical fields as well as HR, marketing, and customer service departments.

A survey by the Boston Consulting Group found that while the majority of workers believe they will need training in AI, only a small percentage have received upskilling to date. This skills gap has led to a shift in the key in-demand skills needed in organizations, with AI literacy becoming a must-have skill for employees in all roles.

Training in GenAI has also emerged as a key perk for attracting and retaining top talent. Companies that offer training in GenAI as part of their talent brand are more likely to attract candidates who value continuous skill development. Additionally, providing GenAI training to existing employees can serve as a retention tool.
