According to a report by Nasscom, India ranks first in AI skill penetration, driven by lucrative compensation and growth prospects. The potential of AI in India is immense, with projections suggesting that data and AI could add USD 450-500 billion to the country’s GDP by 2025.
Industry leaders like upGrad and Coursera are witnessing a surge in demand for AI courses. Mayank Kumar, co-founder and MD of upGrad, highlighted the high demand for specialized AI skills, with enrolments in Tech, Data, and GenAI courses reaching impressive numbers.
Raghav Gupta, MD of Coursera, echoed this sentiment, noting the quadrupling of demand for GenAI courses on their platform. He emphasized that AI will be both a disruptor and an enabler, reshaping industries and transforming the way we learn.
The Indian government has also recognized the importance of AI, with the establishment of the National Program on AI to guide research and development in emerging technologies. The National Strategy for AI targets key sectors like Healthcare, Agriculture, Education, Smart Cities, and Infrastructure for AI implementation.
Universities and online platforms are swiftly adapting to this paradigm shift, introducing up-skilling and specialization courses in AI. Even non-tech industries like media and administration are incorporating AI into their operations, highlighting the widespread impact of this technology.
As the workplace evolves, the skill requirements are also changing. Amit Jain, Assistant Professor at SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, emphasized the need for advanced skills like discerning between useful and irrelevant information with the integration of Generative AI.
