The Impact of Generative AI on Highly Skilled Workers: Study Finds 40% Performance Improvement
A new study on the impact of generative AI on highly skilled workers has revealed some fascinating insights. According to the research, when artificial intelligence is used within the boundary of its capabilities, it can improve a worker’s performance by as much as 40% compared to workers who don’t use it. However, when AI is used outside that boundary to complete a task, worker performance drops by an average of 19 percentage points.
The study, conducted by a multidisciplinary team of researchers including experts from Harvard Business School, The Wharton School, and MIT Sloan, focused on understanding the upper limits of AI’s abilities, specifically generative pretrained transformers (GPT) that produce text after being given prompts.
Lead author of the paper, Fabrizio Dell’Acqua from Harvard Business School, emphasized the importance of maintaining awareness of the “jagged technological frontier” of AI. The researchers found that highly skilled knowledge workers were not always able to distinguish which tasks could be easily performed by AI and which tasks required a different approach.
The study involved over 700 consultants who were assigned tasks designed to fall within or outside GPT-4’s capabilities. Results showed that AI had a positive effect on performance when used within the frontier, with participants seeing significant performance improvements. However, when used outside the frontier, AI had a negative impact on performance.
To maximize the benefits of generative AI for highly skilled workers, the researchers recommended using cognitive effort and experts’ judgment when working with AI. They also highlighted the importance of interface design, onboarding, role reconfiguration, and fostering a culture of accountability within organizations.
Overall, the study provides valuable insights for organizations looking to integrate AI into their workflows and emphasizes the need for a thoughtful approach to leveraging AI technology for improved productivity and quality in knowledge work.
