By following a combination of healthy lifestyle habits, such as nonsmoking, regular exercise, and a Mediterranean-style diet, individuals were found to be 60 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Robert Bender, section chief of the Geriatric and Memory Center at Broadlawns Medical Center, emphasizes the importance of a well-balanced diet high in antioxidants for brain health. Foods such as nuts, berries, vegetables, and chocolate can help protect brain tissue and promote cognitive function.

In addition to nutrition, regular exercise has been shown to benefit brain health. Studies have found that even a short period of low-intensity exercise can increase brain activity in areas responsible for memory and cognitive function. Engaging in physical activity can immediately change the way our brains function, strengthening memory and overall brain health.

Simple exercises like recalling lists, learning a musical instrument, or solving math problems without aid can help stimulate the brain and improve cognitive function.
